Artist Statement

I draw inspiration from mixtape culture. Somewhere between barbershop-bootlegman-mixtape catalogs and all-encompassing platform streaming services, my music appreciation was cultivated. Datpiff.com will always hold a special place in my heart for filling my cd visor organizer, and the subsequent memories derived from pirated mixtape spins in my first Jeep. More than a senior art show and less than a solo art exhibition; Shortytapes (Deluxe) is a fine art equivalent to a mixtape.

Shortytapes (Deluxe) is a two-volume set that includes graphite portraits, collage caricatures, playlists, and poems. Each graphite portrait has a corresponding poem. The poems serve as the titles of the renderings. Hidden in each poem is a playlist. My intention behind this body of work is threefold. Primarily, I want to illuminate the “best bites” of initial interactions with a woman, who shares a mutual attraction. Those moments inhabit the in-between of a shorty’s perpetual obligation to choose and a shorty’s selection. Secondarily, I want to acknowledge light and it’s interactions with forms on faces. I enjoy accessing the value relationships of interesting forms within an image, referencing those values, softening them, and inserting them into open spaces. Lastly, I seek to dignify beauty in individual features and the nuances in facial expressions. I have always felt compelled to respond to beauty, femininity, and humanity. This body of work temporarily satiates my incessant obligation to respond to all three.

    Welcome to Shortytapes (Deluxe)!
